Biology students conducting a field study

Biology

The biology major unlocks the secrets of life at every level, from the smallest organisms to the world’s largest ecosystems, preparing you for an array of rewarding career opportunities.

Overview

Majoring in biology provides you with the opportunity to explore the natural world and understand the structures that sustain life. You will have the opportunity to study the intricacies of molecular and cellular functions as well as the ecological interactions among organisms. Through a diverse set of classes, field work and lab research, biology majors amass the knowledge and technical skills needed to tackle complex problems and make a meaningful impact on the world. In addition to work in the classroom, faculty in the biology program place a strong emphasis on collaborative research with undergraduates, and many opportunities for internship experiences in biology are available. Whether you're passionate about human health, wildlife conservation, or scientific innovation, a biology degree will arm you with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills that are highly valued in various industries.

Your Major Took You Where?

Curriculum

The Biology Program helps you gain a solid background in the discipline while also developing the ability to apply biological principles to our world with foundational courses in chemistry, mathematics, and physics. You will be introduced to the breadth of the discipline in three core courses that provide a groundwork in biological diversity, ecology, evolution, genetics, and cell biology. In your senior capstone seminar course, you will hone your oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to analyze and discuss primary literature in biology.

Experiential Learning

Students engage in hands-on learning experiences and reflection to develop skills and increase knowledge retention.

Biology majors enjoy hands-on laboratory experiences such as microscopy, dissections, animal development, genetic crosses, taxonomy, and more. In addition, you can expect to engage with Centre faculty in a wide range of collaborative research projects as well as field experiences in streams, forests, grasslands, and caves in central Kentucky and off-campus study opportunities in California, Belize, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, and Ecuador.

Internships

We're committed to helping students find quality internship experiences in the career area of their choice.

Internships for biology majors at ¹û¶³´«Ã½ have included Southern Tennessee Regional Health System, Stanford Veterinary Center, Boyd Family Dentistry, U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Tate Geological Museum, Advantage Physical Therapy, Fozo Lab at the University of Tennessee and Meadow Lake Equestrian Center.

Careers

Our extraordinary liberal arts and sciences education prepares students for meaningful lives and careers.

Graduates with a biology degree have found success in careers in healthcare, veterinary medicine, bioengineering, education, microbiology toxicology, dentistry, environmental conservation and research.
